Detwinning YBa2Cu3O7−δ thin films

Abstract: Single crystals of YBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO) have been detwinned under the simultaneous application of heat and uniaxial stress. This approach, however, has proved futile in thin films as they become heavily twinned due to strain from the underlying substrate as well as the orthorhombic unit cell. This lack of control over twinning has made it difficult to determine the role that twins play in determining the transport properties of films. Here, we present a technique for detwinning YBCO thin films. The detwinning in… Show more

“…A TEM study of 3-5 µm BaF 2 -derived YBCO films by Wu et al [139] provided evidence for the minor role of twin planes in pinning, pointing instead to a statistically significant correlation between J c and the in-plane lattice parameters. The small contribution of twin planes to pinning in epitaxial YBCO films is also supported by the demonstration of J c > 1 MA cm −2 in de-twinned YBCO films [140].…”

“…The beam is sampled using an optical chopper running at 1 KHz. It's then focused down, using a long distance objective, to a diameter of 1.5 yielding a fluence of approximately 5 . The beam lands on a YBCO air bridge that is mounted onto the cold finger of continuous flow optical cryostat, which in turn, is mounted on a xyz-axis motorized translation stage, where each axis has a step resolution and accuracy of 0.…”

“…The extent of the microtwinning in thin films has made it difficult to study the transport properties of individual twin boundaries as the length scales involved are inaccessible to the LSM technique. In this report, we will describe a method to circumvent this difficulty by creating free standing micro-bridges void of grain boundManuscript received October 4, 2004 aries, but with twin boundaries on micrometer, instead of the usual nanometer, length scales [5]. Such twin boundaries are accessible to LSM measurements making these microbridges the perfect candidate for studying the transport properties of isolated twin boundaries.…”
