Developing a method for assessing environmental sustainability based on the Google Earth Engine platform

Abstract: Environmental sustainability is the foundation and of great significance for the sustainable development of urban agglomerations. Taking the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration as an example, we developed a method to effectively assess long-term regional environmental sustainability based on the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform. We used the GEE to obtain 5206 Landsat remote sensing images in the region from 1983 to 2016 and developed the comprehensive environmental index (CEI) to assess regional enviro… Show more

“…The spatial and temporal scales of most studies using traditional remote sensing water extraction methods have been limited by local data storage capacity and processing ability. Large data volume, intensive data processing requirements, and low calculation efficiency cause difficulties for researchers in large-scale and long-term research (Xia et al, 2022). The Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform provides an efficient solution for analysis of remote sensing big data.…”

“…All Collection 2 ST products are developed with a single-channel algorithm jointly created by the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). This method solves the problem of reflectivity differences between different data types [48]. The cloud cover of these remote sensing images is less than 5%, and the pixels with clouds in the images are processed by the cloud removal algorithm [49].…”

“…Verhoef and Nijkamp (2002) discussed urban agglomeration sustainability from the perspective of externalities. Xia et al (2022) assessed the environmental sustainability in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei urban agglomeration and found it showed a trend of first rising, then falling, and then rising again in the past 30 years. Cui et al (2021) analyzed the environmental sustainability of the three major urban agglomerations in China from the aspect of input-output efficiency by using the dynamic DEA model.…”
