Developing a monitoring and verification plan with reference to the Australian Otway CO2 pilot project

Abstract: IntroductionThe Australian Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) is currently injecting 100,000 tons of CO 2 in a large scale test of storage technology in a pilot project in South Eastern Australia called the CO2CRC Otway Basin Project (Otway). The Otway Basin with its natural CO 2 accumulations and many depleted gas fields, offers an appropriate site for such a pilot project. An 80% CO 2 stream is produced from a well (Buttress) near to the depleted gas reservoir (Naylor) used … Show more

“…Injection of CO 2 into geological formations, as a partial solution to the global increase of atmospheric CO 2 concentrations, is already underway in different parts of the world. On-shore storage and pilot sites include Ketzin, Germany (Norden et al 2010); Otway Basin, Australia (Dodds et al 2009); Illinois Basin, USA (Frailey and Finley 2008;Barnes et al 2009;Finley et al 2011); Frio, Texas, USA (Hovorka et al 2006;Kharaka et al 2009); Michigan Basin, USA (Bohnhoff et al 2010); Weyburn, Canada (Riding et al 2003;Riding and Rochelle 2009;Rostron and Whittaker 2011); Nagaoka, Japan (Kikuta et al 2005;Sato et al 2009); West Virginia, USA (Calderon et al 2010) and In Salah, Algeria (Riddiford et al 2005). CO 2 can be injected into deep saline aquifers that hold no economic value or as part of enhanced oil recovery (EOR) or enhanced gas recovery (EGR) operations.…”

“…The Cooperative Research Centre for Greenhouse Gas Technologies (CO2CRC) is currently conducting a CO 2 geo-sequestration pilot study in the Otway Basin, onshore Victoria, Australia. Extensive TL seismic monitoring is an essential part of the monitoring and verification program of the Otway Project (Dodds et al, 2009). It includes several repeated 3D surface seismic surveys acquired from 2007-2010, and a large borehole seismic experiment (repeated zero-offset/offset VSP and 4D VSP).…”
