This study seeks to delineate the methodology underpinning principle-based concept analysis. To initiate this study, a non-systematic exploration was conducted in the PubMed database and Google Scholar search engine, with no temporal constraints. The keywords employed for this search encompassed "concept analysis", "principle-based concept analysis", and "penrod and hupcey". Ultimately, the full texts of sixteen studies, each delineating their methodological approach as concept analysis based on principles, were procured for a comprehensive examination. The findings indicate that principle-based concept analysis is executed with a focal emphasis on the imperative incorporation of four foundational philosophical principles: epistemology, pragmatism, linguistics, and logic at each stage of the analytical process. The methodological sequence comprises the following steps: 1) the discernment and selection of pertinent texts, 2) the meticulous sampling strategy aligned with the identified concept, and 3) the comprehensive internal and interdisciplinary analysis. This approach posits concepts as experiential abstractions derived from reality or truth that transcend the contextual dimensions of human existence. The amalgamation of these truths culminates in the collective expression, elucidating the most plausible approximation of truth. Consequently, the bedrock of principle-based concept analysis rests upon the notion of probable truth, as delineated within the scientific literature. The outcomes of a concept analysis are essential for researchers aiming to discern and pursue avenues for the development of the examined concept. In the context of principle-based concept analysis, each guiding principle facilitates an understanding of the strengths and limitations inherent in the current state of the concept within the scientific literature.

Self at Risk: Self-Esteem and Quality of Life in Cancer Patients Undergoing Surgical Treatment and Experiencing Bodily Deformities

Self-esteem is an important factor determining QoL after surgical procedures leading to bodily deformities associated with cancer treatment. However, there are few data on which components of self-esteem are most closely related to QoL. The article presents two studies that aim to fill this gap. Study 1 concerns changes in global self-esteem and QoL in patients treated surgically for oral cancer (n = 35); Study 2 concerns changes in explicit and implicit self-esteem and QoL in women with breast cancer undergoing mastectomy (n = 96). The study was longitudinal with two measurements: before and after surgery. Both studies used the EORTC QLQ-C30 and Rosenberg’s SES questionnaires. In Study 2, the Implicit Association Test (IAT) was additionally performed. The patients’ global QoL and self-esteem deteriorated after surgery. In Study 1, patients with higher initial self-esteem showed a greater range of decreased self-esteem and QoL than patients with initially low self-esteem. In Study 2, the largest decreases in various dimensions of QoL and explicit self-esteem were observed in women with fragile self-esteem. A group of women with high explicit and implicit self-esteem showed the best QoL after mastectomy. Cancer patients with high, fragile self-esteem are at risk of the greatest deterioration in QoL and self-image after cancer surgery. These people should be given special psycho-oncological care.

Multiple skleroz hastalığı kronik ve dejeneratif bir hastalıktır. Multiple skleroz tanılı çocuk hastalarda bazı belirti ve bulguların ortaya çıkması ve bu bulguların hastalığa özgü olmaması, belirsizliğin öncüleri olarak görülmektedir. Sonucunun ne olacağını bilmeden bu belirsizlikle büyümek, çocuklarda ikincil sağlık problemlerine ve yetişkinlik döneminde bazı krizlerin ortaya çıkmasına neden olmaktadır. Bu çocuklar erken yaşlardan itibaren belirsizlik yaşamaya başlarlar ve yetişkinlik dönemine geldiklerinde bu belirsizliğin sonucu olarak karışıklık ve uyum problemleri yaşarlar. Bu karışıklığı gidermek için de değişime giderler ve yaşamdan anlam bulmaya çalışırlar. Böylece artan belirsizlikten adaptasyona doğru bir süreç yaşamış olurlar. 14 yaşında multiple skleroz tanısı alana ve şu anda 21 yaşında olan olgumuz ile iki kere derinlemesine bireysel görüşme yapılmıştır. Bu görüşmelerde yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme formu kullanılmıştır. Olgunun çocukluktan erişkinliğe yaşamış olduğu deneyimlerin ortaya çıkartılması ve bu deneyimlerin Hastalıkta Belirsizlik Kuramına göre açıklanması amaçlanmıştır. Görüşmeler sonucu ortaya çıkan veriler ile, nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden yorumlayıcı fenomenolojik kuramsal temelde, Maxqda Plus v10 nitel veri analiz programı kullanılarak tematik analiz yapılmıştır. Sonuç olarak, olgumuz, çocukluk döneminde belirsizliği tehlike olarak anlamlandırmış ve öfke, kaçınma, içe kapanma, uyumsuzluk gibi etkisiz baş etme stratejilerini kullanmıştır. Erişkin dönemine geldiğinde ise mevcut durumu büyüme fırsatı olarak görmüş ve hastalığı ve tedaviyi kabul ederek daha anlamlı bir yaşam sürmeye başlamıştır.
