Developing a theoretical definition of self‐organization: A principle‐based concept analysis in the context of uncertainty in chronic illness

Abstract: Aim: To develop a theoretical definition of self-organization to increase the understanding of the Reconceptualized Uncertainty in Illness Theory (RUIT).Background: Mishel described the change of the uncertainty appraisal over time in people with a chronic illness by means of the RUIT. Therefore, she introduced the concept of self-organization. However, its meaning is difficult to comprehend because its descriptions remained highly abstract. Design: A principle-based concept analysis. Data Source: Entries of l… Show more

“…In a study by Eppel-Meichlinger et al, (2022), which aimed to establish a theoretical definition of the concept of "self-organization" in the context of uncertainty in chronic disease, conceptual components, including antecedents, promotion factors, characteristics, and consequences of self-organization, were presented. A theoretical model of self-organization was subsequently proposed [40] (Figure 2).…”

“…Self-esteem affects the assessment of a stressful situation-the better the self-esteem, the more often the patient treats the disease as a challenge. This leads to more frequent positive emotions, such as hope [16], positive cognitive reframing of the illness and finally, constructive adaptation to the state of being ill [12,17]. The more positive someone's self-esteem, the lower the likelihood of mental disorders (anxiety, depression) occurring in the course of the disease and during treatment [18,19].…”
