Developing Academic Identity: A Review of the Literature on Doctoral Writing and Feedback

Abstract: Aim/Purpose: This systematic review synthesizes the literature on doctoral writing and feedback published in peer-reviewed English-language journals between 1997 and 2017 to provide insight into how these topics have been theorized and approached. The goal was to examine how this literature characterizes the development of academic identity in doctoral students to better understand the conceptual relationships underpinning previous studies, and advance work on writing, feedback, and identity to support budding… Show more

“…Over 30 years' worth of reasons has identified numerous flaws in the current academic system: "publish or perish" (Benninghoff, 2011); journal and university rankings (Adler & Harzing, 2009); managerialisation of higher education (Gray et al, 2002); high-pressure doctoral programs (Ashcraft, 2017;Skakni, 2018); as well as mental health issues stemming from anxiety, and depression (Custer, 2019;UCU, 2016). Research on work-life balance (Pigeon, 2016), resilience (Brewer et al, 2019), and academic identity development (Gardner, 2008;Inouye & McAlpine, 2019) contradicts the identity imposed by the doctoral environment and is reinforced via training to become "productive" academics (Panozzo, 1997). Strategic publication, networking, and grant writing have little to do with intellectual pluralism (Parker & Guthrie, 2009) but have become central to an academic career (Raineri, 2013(Raineri, , 2015.…”

“…As I reconciled my professional and scholarly identities, I continued to face linguistic challenges -with academic language imposing itself and becoming a leading plot in my new life overseas. Becoming adept in academic language and, particularly in research writing, was important both as a determining factor in degree completion (Sala-Bubaré et al, 2018) and as a gateway into the academic research community (Flowerdew, 2008;Inouye and McAlpine, 2019).…”

“…It became apparent early on that written products were the most valued outputs in academia (Paré, 2017). Research writing, therefore, would become an important part of gaining group membership into the academic community and the overall socialisation process in doctoral study (Flowerdew, 2008;Inouye and McAlpine, 2019;Sala-Bubaré et al, 2018). An additional level of adaptability for me had to do with my interaction as a research manager.…”
