Developing and implementing a treatment intervention for college students found responsible for sexual misconduct

Abstract: Purpose The purpose of this paper is to summarize the development of a treatment program for students found responsible of sexual misconduct. Design/methodology/approach This project, supported by the SMART (Office of Sex Offender Sentencing, Monitoring, Apprehending, Registering and Tracking) of the Department of Justice, was requested by The White House toward the end of President Obama’s last term and was intended to identify the confluence of factors related to sexual misconduct on college campuses, and … Show more

“…From a public health perspective, cultivating practices and attitudes contrary to such risk factors, as well as enhancing empathy, may be effective areas to emphasize more in preventative interventions once techniques designed to reduce defensiveness and reactance have been implemented as well. One such application is the STARRSA (Science‐based Treatment, Accountability, Risk Reduction for Sexual Assault) program (Lamade et al, 2018). STARRSA begins with an assessment of risk factors for sexual aggression.…”

“…Another systemlevel rape prevention methodology that is underutilized is improved accountability for sexual misconduct, which currently is infrequently sanctioned (Abbey et al, 2014). In addition to repair of harm to the victim, perpetrators may benefit from rehabilitation to reduce the likelihood of re-offending (Koss, 2014;Lamade, et al, 2018). It is unrealistic to expect that perpetrators will desist from strategies that increase the likelihood of obtaining sex (the benefit), until accountability (the cost) of being reported for rape by exploitation of alcohol incapacitation becomes higher than it is currently.…”

“…To create a compelling 30-year interval, the designations 1985 and 2015 label the two datasets even though each required portions of 2 years to complete (1984-1985 and 2015-2016). The 2015 sample was collected as part of a larger project (Lamade et al, 2018). Before delving deeper into methodology, we begin with a statement on gender inclusivity.…”

“…SV experienced on university campuses is also uniquely situated for these RJ recommendations, given recent changes in Title IX guidelines allowing for “informal resolutions” for sexual misconduct concerns. However, this context may face unique challenges that are important to consider, owing to the limitations and complexities associated with implementing such programming in a higher education system (Lamade et al, 2018). For example, Koss (2014) found that harmed persons should receive free consultations with an attorney for comprehensive understanding and discernment of which pathway(s) of SV adjudication fit their goals.…”
