Developing conceptions of classroom environments: Some light on the T in classroom studies of ATI

Abstract: Classrooms can be described in terms of the recurrent activity structures teachers use. Activity structures such as reading circle or seatwork have different functions and possess rules and norms to guide the behavior of individuals in the structure. A taxonomy and description of eleven activity structures was derived from observations of over 1200 activity structures in elementary classrooms. Each structure was coded for duration, number of students, the teachers role, student attention, etc. The activity str… Show more

“…that affect life in that classroom. Knowing that a child lives in America, attends a public school, and is in a particular fifth grade class tells us a great deal in general about the context in which that child encounters academic work (Berliner, 1983). But, as Berliner also points out, every class and school setting has embedded within it more "local" contexts or subenvironments.…”

“…A segment includes the physical milieu, the segment's "action structure" (the goals, rules, and roles for that time period), the fit between the action structure and the physical milieu, and a set of spatial and temporal boundaries. Berliner (1983) presents another system for describing local context that specifies 11 "activity structures" such as seatwork, two-way presentation, and reading circle. These activity structures are characterized by certain norms, participant roles, evaluation procedures, and so on.…”

“…Doyle (1986) states, "the task of promoting learning and order are closely intertwined: some minimal level of orderliness is necessary for instruction to occur and lessons must be sufficiently well constructed to capture and sustain student attention" (p. 395). The type of management used by the teacher is also affected by the activity that is taking place in the classroom (Berliner, 1983;Doyle, 1986;Emmer, 1987). Students must be taught what is expected of them during different segments of the school day or lesson.…”
