Developing Design Criteria for Sustainable Urban Parks

Abstract: This study investigates how urban parks can contribute to helping cities become more sustainable through developing a set of criteria for the sustainable design of urban parks. Today, there is no example around the world where all the proposed sustainable design criteria are applied together in a specific urban park. In this context, this study aims to make a novel contribution by systematically reviewing the literature on the sustainable design of urban parks. In the light of research findings, this study con… Show more

“…The concentration of population in cities causes massive energy consumption and carbon emissions, therefore, building greener cities is vital to accomplishing the goal of carbon neutrality and alleviating global climate crises. Urban parks are a valuable resource in building sustainable cities, as they offer environmental, economic and social advantages [2]. Moreover, they provide pleasant spaces for physical exercise and contribute to promoting city residents' health and reducing risks of developing chronic diseases [3,4].…”

“…Dizdaroglu, Z. Shafiq, and Vallance [21][22][23] advocated that social sustainability has multiple dimensions, including (a) social capital, justice, and equity; (b) changes in behavior to achieve bio-physical environmental goals; and (c) the conservation of socio-cultural characteristics, as well as how individuals actively embrace or oppose change. On the other hand, economic sustainability focuses on profitability and the appropriate accounting of ecosystem services, for optimizing the cost-benefit assessment, according to [20], while the authors in [24] argue that economic sustainability involves more than just GDP, exchange rates, and profit; it also includes the creation, distribution, and consumption of commodities and services.…”

“…This function states that the goal of museums is to make access to lifelong learning possible. This can be achieved via the special resources that museums have available for both formal and informal education through traditional activities, like providing tours or informational materials, utilizing historical artefacts in participatory and interactive programs, or planning workshops and implementing trans-disciplinary educational initiatives [21][22][23]. The regeneration of local economies and the leisure and entertainment function are two additional functions that may be added to the educational function.…”

“…They are a valuable resource in designing sustainablecities (Dinep and Schwab, 2010). Urban parks serve also an education platform, social advantages, create a positive effect on physical and mental health (Čibik, et al, 2022;Dizdaroglu, 2022) and they are great places for everyday recreation and relaxation (Ball Scott, 2012;Supuka and Bihuňová, 2018). Maintenance and preservation of social relations and meanings, which refer to diverse histories, values and relationship of contemporary population is defined by Low et al (2005) as social sustainability.…”
