Developing Elements of User Experience for Mobile Phones and Services: Survey, Interview, and Observation Approaches

Abstract: The term user experience (UX) encompasses the concepts of usability and affective engineering. However, UX has not been defined clearly. In this study, a literature survey, user interview and indirect observation were conducted to develop definitions of UX and its elements. A literature survey investigated 127 articles that were considered to be helpful to define the concept of UX. An in‐depth interview targeted 14 hands‐on workers in the Korean mobile phone industry. “…Korhonen et al [12] surveyed mobile users and concluded that the mobile device, task at hand and social context are the most influencing factors of the user's QoE. Similarly, Park et al [13] indicated usability, usefulness and affect as the factors, and Shin et al [14] added enjoyment, as well as network access quality to this list. Reichl et al [3] attempt to evaluate QoE in real user environments by capturing user interaction with the mobile phone, as well as the user context using two different cameras mounted on a large female hat worn by the user.…”

“…Although there are multiple categorizations with respect to the elements that comprise the user's experience (Castañeda, Muñoz-Leiva and Luque, 2007;Law et al, 2009;Garrett, 2010;Park et al, 2013;Jang et al, 2016), the proposal by Jang and partners (2016) exclusively evidences its association with the design of game elements in a non-game context. Therefore, the model designed towards the public policies is prescribed according to the following dimensions:…”

“…Recent studies have constructed and investigated user experience in different contexts. For instance, Park et al [15] classify user experience with mobile phones into three categories (present, brand, and product/service experience) and identify specific elements in each category by using survey, interview, and observation methods. Pu et al [16] evaluate the perceived quality of recommendations from a recommendation system by using their proposed evaluation framework consisting of four basic constructs: user perceived qualities, user beliefs, user attributes, and behavioral intensions.…”
