Developing Marginal Near-Tight Gas Fields in a Mature Area With Long-Reach Hydraulically Fractured Wells - A Case Study

Abstract: The L12/L15 area is located in the Dutch sector of the Southern North Sea, some 5–10 km from the coastline of the Wadden Islands. Exploration in the 1970s led to the discovery of five small, near-tight (permeability ~1 mD) gas accumulations in a Rotliegend sandstone reservoir, located at a depth of ~3000m. Two of the fields were developed in the 1990s with 5 production wells drilled from a central 9-slot processing platform. The three remaining discoveries, all within drilling reach of the platform, were consi… Show more

“…Previous interpretations of the FWLs and the level of expected pressure equilibrium across the field prior to drilling the L15b-A108A well were explained by the operator through a model in which the fault between the Northern and Central domains was fully closed (Weijermans et al 2016). In this model, after initially sharing the same (palaeo-) FWL across the field, the northern and Central/Southern domains became isolated due to Fig.…”

“…11) within the gas column. A considerable amount of thorough research has been carried out by current and previous operators to understand the dynamic behaviour of the field, which is partly captured by Weijermans et al (2016). The field was taken into production after drilling the L15-FA-106 well (abbreviated to the A106 well here) in the northern compartment close to the subsurface location of the original L12-3 discovery well in 2000.…”

“…These special gas reservoir characteristics put forward new requirements for reasonable production allocation. There are many recent studies focused on tight gas reservoirs, such as 3D modeling (Gonzalez et al, 2014), an integrated approach with detailed static and dynamic reservoir modeling (Weijermans et al, 2016), and cross-plot multiple regression analysis (Gai et al, 2015).…”
