The C# attributes have been available since the release of this language as a means to configure custom metadata on code elements. Being very similar to Java annotations, they are both introduced directly in the source code. Several C# frameworks such as NUnit, Unity Game Engine, and JSON.net use attributes to allow applications to configure custom metadata, as to execute different behavior and validation. This paper presents the Attribute Sniffer, a tool to collect attributes metrics on the C# source code, also validating the metrics proposed initially for Java annotations.

The rapid development of hardware and system platforms provides a favorable foundation for game development. A game engine overview is introduced irst. Then, key features and available solutions of game engines are discussed. Typical products of game engines are shown and evaluated. Finally, we summarize our indings.Keywords: game engine, game builder, 3D game, 2D game, engine architecture IntroductionGame engines are a new way to develop high-quality games easily and rapidly without needing intensive programming skills and computational resources. Today, there is growing interest in game engines due to the rapid development of hardware and system platforms.3D game engines help game companies reduce their cost, time, and manpower, since game developers can use the available functionalities of the engine. However, with over 100 engines available in the market for commercial and educational purposes, with a wide range of diverse features, each with its own performance levels, license types, and cost structures, selecting an appropriate game engine for a speciic purpose becomes a challenging problem.Game engine systems hit the headlines only a few years ago. Before the appearance of game engine technologies [1,2], existing systems were often developed as virtual augmented reality systems to handle speciic tasks such as NPSNET [3], DIVE [4], and SPLINE [5]. Thus, any modiication required a hard change in the programming environment and architecture. As game engine technology matures and becomes more lexible, implementing a 3D environment will become easier. Despite these improvements, programming skills remain a concern, and usually sabotage developers who want to create complex environments.© 2018 The Author(s). Licensee InTech. Game mechanics are high‐level descriptions of common game requirements; however, they do not provide any guidance on their code implementation. Nevertheless, their implementation involves high volumes of essential complexity, which in turn leads to the introduction of accidental complexity (long methods, code repetition, etc.). A possible solution to this problem is to map game mechanics to design patterns, in order to provide template instantiations that handle structural complexity. The aim of this study is twofold: (a) introduce template instantiations of game mechanics with Gang of Four (GoF) patterns and (b) evaluate such mappings in terms of extendibility and reusability. To achieve these objectives, we developed an online repository of mappings between GoF patterns and game mechanics and conducted an experiment to explore the benefits of the mapping. The results of the study suggest that the implementation of game mechanics with GoF patterns is beneficial, because the time to extent the current implementation or reuse code chunks is not prolonged, whereas the implementations are less faulty. Finally, the suggested mapping will equip game mechanics with sample implementations (that adhere to good design principles—ensuring extendibility) that can be reused, acting as a starting point for source code development.
