Developing Multi-player Digital Adventure Education Game with Motion Sensing Technologies

Abstract: Adventure education activities are courses that emphasize on first hand experience learning in situated environment with cooperative groups. In this research, Xbox Kinect and Unity 3D game engine are used to develop the two adventure education games. Digital games can solve some of the problems physical adventure education activities face, such as space limitations and dangers. With the simulations, players can experience the unattainable activities in real life, immerse in the collaborative activities, and ex… Show more

“…Serious games that are motion-based can make the process of learning more interactive and attractive for both students and teachers, particularly for those with high levels of internal motivation (Ibanez, 2013;Wyeth, 2008;Yuen et al, 2013). Motion-capture games are educationally promising because they elicit meta-cognitive development, which is an essential component in increasing the learning achievements of students (Hsu et al, 2013).…”

“…Multiplayer games require and enhance social skills, developing and eliciting knowledge relevant to interactions within a game as well as collaboration with others (Voulgari, Komis, & Sampson, 2013). Because of this, multiplayer Kinect games have the potential to enhance a range of student leadership skills, including teamwork, trust-building, responsibility, problem-solving, decision-making, leadership, goal setting, and effective communication (Hsu et al, 2013;Sancho, Gómez-Martin, & Fernández-Manjón, 2008).…”

“…Among them, the first five represent teachercentred "replication-style" teaching, while the last six tend to involve the student-centred "production-style" form. Most teachers focus on the "copying" method, with the result that students have less experience in exploring the movement process independently, and physical education instructors also mostly use the "direct method" [31][32][33].…”

“…As the technology grows all over the years from 1980s to high tech graphics system using Graphical Processing Unit (GPU) chipset, the game turned into graphical gameplay where player be able to move the character or player using keyboard or mouse or any other input. One of the adventure games was a Colossal Cave game where it takes the player into a role model that go through interactive storyline where player needs to explore and solve puzzle [14][15][16][17][18][19][20][21]. The player needs to find or collect any mission artifacts as instructed by the NPC or combine any artifacts in order to get the things for the mission.…”
