“…Therefore, real-time monitoring of perishable commodities in cold storage is required to overcome the loss and ensure availability (Afreen and Bajwa, 2021). A recent study on biophysical food, a prototype that replicates the intercellular air space of a genuine product that is equipped with core and surface sensors, can collect temperature data to optimize cold chain operations and reduce postharvest losses (You et al ., 2023).…”

“…ICT implementations enable fast grading of fruits and the assessment of the freshness of processed foods (Li et al ., 2018; Torres et al ., 2019, 2020; Manthou et al ., 2022) and have significantly improved food shelf life (La Scalia et al ., 2017). The literature demonstrates several ICT capabilities in various aspects of FVSC that include real-time condition monitoring (Afreen and Bajwa, 2021), cold chain operations optimization (You et al ., 2023), increase shelf-life and safety of FV (Wang et al ., 2017; Bogataj et al ., 2017; Ktenioudaki et al ., 2021; Yang et al ., 2020) amongst others. These ICT capabilities and roles are critical for improving the sustainability of FVSC through preventing/minimizing FV food waste/losses as well as ensuring the quality and traceability of FV sources.…”
