Developing specialized guided worksheets for active learning in physics lectures

Abstract: As universities attempt to integrate active learning into their lectures, a range of strategies is emerging. Amongst the strategies is pre-prepared worksheets which students work through, facilitated by the lecturer. Despite the fact that worksheets have not yet been the subject of much research activity, there are instances of their use. Once such instance is by a pair of physics lecturers at Mahidol University, Thailand. The worksheets, called guided worksheets as they provide structure for students to take … Show more

“…The simultaneous or sequential combination of peer discussion and writing has been shown to enhance student understanding and retention of complex concepts in STEM education [3335], and this type of effect may explain the learning gains associated with worksheets in our study. Furthermore, this type of activity has been implemented in STEM classrooms [3639], and assessment of student learning indicates that worksheets increase conceptual understanding when used as part of an active learning curriculum [36,39]. In the courses that we observed, many of the worksheets were guided activities that were embedded within the lectures or were ‘case-study’ approaches that required students to examine multiple aspects of a particular problem.…”

“…From the analysis of the cognitive test results, obtained by the average value of students increased and the most of the students have acquired cognitive value exceeds the value of minimum completeness criteria. This shows that teaching materials of problem-based learning with the module in the learning effect on the cognitive abilities of students [15] [16].…”

“…Therefore, aspects of active learning were also incorporated into APD modules, although this was challenging in an online environment. Drawing on evidence from the Physics community, "guided worksheets" (described further in "worksheet design") were developed to accompany each module as a way to help participants keep pace with and focus on the most relevant content presented (Sujarittham et al, 2016). In addition, engaging students' metacognitive skills has been shown to increase the effectiveness of online courses (Cacciamani et al, 2012).…”
