Today’s education has been shaped by the rapid development of digital technologies and easy accessibility to a large number of electronic sources. This has instigated a genuine need to change current teaching attitudes and practices. Wikipedia, as a multilingual online platform open to all, is a source of information that is used on a daily basis and therefore cannot be ignored in the teaching process. The aim of this study is to explore the possibilities of using the Estonian Wikipedia for teaching purposes in general education schools. The study is based on semi-structured interviews with 49 teachers from 11 general education schools in Estonia. The results of the qualitative content analysis of the interviews indicate that teachers consider the use of Wikipedia to be a suitable for teaching, alongside other information sources and environments. However, teachers acknowledge some uncertainty and caution towards Wikipedia, as they do not consider it a very reliable teaching tool: an attitude largely inherited from the early days of Wikipedia. While teachers themselves are active and frequent Wikipedia users, and allow students to search for information, they do not assign Wikipedia-based text-creation tasks to students. The results of this study provide a basis for discussion about integrating Wikipedia into teaching in a way that is accessible, engaging, and inclusive for students.

In the past ten years, in the context of higher education Wikipedia has started to be seen as a friend, not a foe. Hence a number of courses involve a variety of Wikipedia-based tasks. The aim of the present article is to assess the suitability of Wikipedia-based authentic writing tasks from the students' perspective. The qualitative content analysis of students' learning journals has indicated that the process of writing is well supported by dividing the task into separate stages and providing feedback at every stage. Nevertheless, the teaching process should also involve raising learners' genre awareness as the knowledge that students get while reading Wikipedia might not be sufficient for writing an article that would meet all the genre requirements.

Purpose: The aim of the study was to find out how and why students use Wikipedia and what their attitudes are towards Wikipedia as a source of information for learning. Methodology: The article is based on a quantitative study in which 381 Estonian school children participated in filling out an online survey. The questionnaire included both multiple-choice and open-ended questions. Findings: Statistical analyses and responses to open-ended questions showed that students often use Wikipedia as a primary source of information, but that their use of the site for learning tasks is guided by teachers’ attitudes and perceptions towards Wikipedia. Students perceive Wikipedia as a quick and convenient source of information but are uncertain about its reliability. Under teachers’ guidance, they have learnt to search for information and to be source-critical, while more attention is needed to develop academic literacy, including both text comprehension and text composition. Value: As there is still very little research on how Wikipedia is used for learning purposes in general education schools, the results of the study contribute to further discussion on the potential of Wikipedia as an innovative teaching tool for different subjects.
