“…The system consisted of five main modules: CFD model, particle model, mass transfer model, light accumulation model, and algae growth model (Figure 1). turbulent kinetic energy; 17,18 radial velocity; 12,17,18 dead zone; 15,17,19 The CFD model was established by Ansys Fluent software to construct the two-phase flow model of photobioreactors with different structures and cultivation conditions. Except the basic CFD model, the improvement of the other four models were made and listed as follows: The particle model was built based on the stable flow field inside the photobioreactor established by the CFD model, and the related parameters were calculated by programming.…”

“…Compared with time-consuming and high-cost experiments, numerical models have been widely used in the design, optimization, and performance evaluation of PBRs in recent years. For examples, the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model was applied to describe the internal flow , and mixing conditions of the bioreactor; coupled with the CFD model, the particle model was used to simulate the movement of cells and evaluate the light utilization or mixing conditions; the mass transfer model was adopted to calculate the CO 2 absorption of algae in medium; and the light model was used to estimate the light utilization of algae in the reactor. , Table summarizes the above relevant CFD studies on flow and mixing, particle model, mass transfer model, and light model, which indicates that CFD simulation is the most basic job in the reactor design and optimization. However, most previous research studies only used relevant CFD modules to study part of the performance of PBRs and found the optimal cultivation conditions through experiments, , but there was a lack of comprehensive study on these conditions through a model system.…”

“…[ 49 ] Another novel model was designed as a hexagonal airlift flat‐plate (HAFP) PBR combined with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation which exhibited much higher CO 2 removal and biofixation as compared to a traditional PBR along with remarkably high nutrient removal efficiency from wastewater. [ 50 ]…”
