This work presents a whole-year simulation study on nonlinear mixed-integer Model Predictive Control (MPC) for a complex thermal energy supply system which consists of a heat pump, stratified water storages, free cooling facilities, and a large underground thermal storage. For solution of the arising Mixed-Integer Non-Linear Programs (MINLPs) we apply an existing general and optimalcontrol-suitable decomposition approach. To compensate deviation of forecast inputs from measured disturbances, we introduce a moving horizon estimation step within the MPC strategy. The MPC performance for this study, which consists of more than 50,000 real time suitable MINLP solutions, is compared to an elaborate conventional control strategy for the system. It is shown that MPC can significantly reduce the yearly energy consumption while providing a similar degree of constraint satisfaction, and autonomously identify previously unknown, beneficial operation modes.

In a thermoelectric coupling energy system, renewable energy is often curtailed by the uncertainty of the power generation. Besides, the integration of renewable energy is restricted by the inflexible operation of combined heat and power units due to the strong coupling relationship between power generation and heating supply, especially in winter. Utilization of the district heating network, a heat storage feature, is a cost-effective measure to improve the overall system operational flexibility. In this paper, a new heat characteristic index is proposed in a district heating system, which is applied to measure the impact of the flexibility of combined heat and power units’ output. Furthermore, in order to increase the reliability of an electric power system, a probabilistic model of combined heat and power units’ spinning reserves capacity related to confidence level K is established. What is more, the two indexes K and thermal characteristic index have a coupled relationship. In addition, for model solving methodology, the discretized step transformation and constant mass flow and variables temperature method is adopted to transform the non-linear system model into linear programming form. Case studies are carried out to show the linkage between system costs, K and thermal characteristic index. The optimal result can achieve balance among the system reliability, flexibility and economy.

In this investigation, a numerical and multi-criteria analysis of energy flow in the primary school in the city of Kragujevac is presented. A model of the existing school building with a district heating system was created. Alternative heating systems (the gas boiler, the pellet boiler, and the ground source heat pump) were analyzed to achieve energy savings. Different types of buildings are simulated with and without photovoltaic panels. Google SketchUp was used for building modeling, while EnergyPlus simulated buildings' energy behavior in real conditions. Results show that pellet boilers with photovoltaic panels can reduce primary energy by 89% and CO₂ emission by 87.55%. For the ground source heat pump with photovoltaic panels, the final energy saving is 77.83%, primary energy saving is 70.82%, and CO₂ reduction is 57.90%. Using numerical and multi-criteria analyses, the authors want to bring the existing public buildings closer to the zero-energy building concept and the city closer to the sustainable development concept.
