Development and assessment of a web-based intervention for educating older people on strategies promoting healthy cognition

Abstract: BackgroundThe increase in the population of aging people has increased the occurrence of cognitive decline leading to predemented stage of dementia, ie, mild cognitive impairment (MCI). The cognitive tools that are web-based have been proven to be useful in decreasing the risk of MCI. Thus, in the present study, an education tool that is web-based, called WESIHAT 2.0©, had been created to educate elderly people about precautionary strategies against MCI.MethodologyWESIHAT 2.0 was devised in a senior-friendly s… Show more

“…The findings of this study show that the seniors in the intervention group receiving individual tailored-made Mediterranean-like dietary advice (NU-AGE diet) experienced considerable improvements in global cognition [β 0.20 (95% CI 0.004, 0.39), p -value = 0.046] and episodic memory [β 0.15 (95% CI 0.02, 0.28), p -value = 0.025] after 1 year when compared with the control group. In fact, the trend toward a more personalized medicine is nowadays also supported with the emergence of new technological devices, which can educate and provide expert advice to seniors about the lifestyle modification strategies, such as appropriate dietary patterns in order to slow down their age-related cognitive decline ( Vanoh et al, 2018 ). These personalized dietary interventions can then contribute to higher adherence to healthy diet as it has been already indicated in the section “Introduction.” Research goes even further and suggests conducting N-of-1 trials that would explore nutrition and cognitive performance in an individual.…”

“…The recruits from the intervention group were exposed to WESIHAT 2.0©, a web-based application for a duration of six months (at least 30 minutes per day). The development and acceptability of WESI-HAT 2.0 have already been reported [25]. For the first three months of the intervention, group counselling was conducted among respondents in the intervention group to educate them about the components of WESIHAT 2.0©.…”

“…Specific websites tackling the risk-reduction approach for MCI are lacking, especially for older populations in Malaysia where Malay is the most commonly spoken language. Thus, a senior-friendly, web-based health education website, WESIHAT 2.0©, was developed [25] as an extension of the previous WESIHAT version [26] to assist in the effort to lower the risk of MCI. The main objective of the current study was to determine the efficacy of WESIHAT 2.0©application towards cognition, physical fitness, biochemical indices, and psychosocial parameters.…”
