Development and Characterization of Oral Spray for Stomatitis Containing Irsogladine Maleate

Abstract: The stomatitis caused by anticancer agents and radiation therapy deteriorates patient QOL, potentially causing eating disorders as a result of pain. Although gargling and ointments can be used in the treatment of stomatitis, patients must spit out mouthwash after use, while ointment application requires a finger to be inserted into the oral cavity. In contrast, sprays eliminate these potential compliance problems. Therefore, we developed a stomatitis spray that remains on the oral mucosa. It has been reported … Show more

“…Hydroxypropyl-β-CD eliminates the unpleasant taste of irsogladine maleate used for treatment of stomatitis. Addition of the macrocycle to the mucoadhesive gum ghatti, consisting of high-molecular-weight polysaccharides, leads to the formation of a viscous solution as a result of aggregation due to hydrogen bonds between the macrocycle and the polymer [ 257 ].…”

“…Several studies on new oral mucosa formulations are also in progress. [1][2][3] Semisolid type, patch type, and spray type formulations can be considered as a typical preparation for the oral mucosa, although the spray type has not been studied extensively. 4) Aphthous stomatitis is one of the target diseases for such a preparation.…”
