Development and Characterization of Zein/Ag-Sr Doped Mesoporous Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles Coatings for Biomedical Applications

Abstract: Implants are used to replace damaged biological structures in human body. Although stainless steel (SS) is a well-known implant material, corrosion of SS implants leads to the release of toxic metallic ions, which produce harmful effects in human body. To prevent material degradation and its harmful repercussions, these implanted materials are subjected to biocompatible coatings. Polymeric coatings play a vital role in enhancing the mechanical and biological integrity of the implanted devices. Zein is a natura… Show more

“…A cross cut area significantly greater than 35%, but not significantly greater than 65%, is affected Any degree of flaking that cannot be classified even by classification 4 (1B) mechanical strength of the coatings. Batool et al [42] demonstrated that a polymer matrix (e.g., zein) can act as a binder to hold another material on the surface and thus increase the mechanical stability of coatings. This study was limited to studying the mechanical properties of different concentrations of zein with a calcium silicate composite coating on PEEK implant material.…”

“…The addition of ceramics to zein also increases the mechanical strength of the coatings. The available literature includes information on the use of hydroxbioactive mesoporous glass, 27 hydroxyapatite, 28 silica, 29 or dense bioactive glass particles 24,30 as bioactive components in zein coatings. In biomedical engineering, interest in silica-based bioactive glass is growing due to its bioactivity, osteoinductivity and antibacterial effects.…”

“…45,46 Among the available literature, there are not many publications reporting the EPD of zein coatings incorporating mesoporous sol-gel bioactive glasses. Batool et al 27 reported a successful attempt at EPD of zein-based coatings containing mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles doped with Ag-Sr (Ag-Sr MBGNs) on 316 L stainless steel substrates. The suspension used consisted of zein (6 wt%), distilled water (20 wt%), ethanol (74 wt%), acetic acid (∼10 ml to reduce the pH to ∼3) and Ag-Sr MBGNs (3*10 −3 kg dm −3 ) added to a 100 ml beaker.…”
