Development and evaluation of a measure of fear of commitment.

Abstract: The purpose of this series of studies was to examine the utility of fear of commitment in understanding the differences between career undecidedness vs. more complicated and chronic career indecisiveness. Undecided and decided college students were targeted on the basis of the hypothesis that educational indecision comprises a cognitive and behavioral pattern that is related to career indecision and may be related to career indecisiveness. The 3 studies with a total of 707 college students involved the psychom… Show more

“…Items like "While making most decisions I am slow/quick" (Career Factors Inventory, Chartrand et al, 1990) and "I try to put off making decisions" (Indecisiveness scale, Frost & Shows, 1993) refer to the decisional process itself, whereas items like "I seem not to feel good about myself much of time," "I often feel helpless in dealing with unpleasant situations" (Indecisiveness scale, Cooper et al, 1984), and "For me decision making seems frustrating/fulfilling" (Career Factors Inventory, Chartrand et al, 1990) refer to feelings that may be correlates or causal factors of indecisiveness. Although research shows that there is a relationship between decision problems and personality characteristics, like low self-esteem (Kishor, 1981;Salomone, 1982;Serling & Betz, 1990), when items referring to such characteristics are included, the resulting measure of indecisiveness is confounded, so that it is no longer appropriate for studying the relation between indecisiveness and these other variables.…”

“…However, while subjects move away from no commitment to some commitment, many are reluctant to give up the possibility to withdraw from commitment in the future, even if this comes both at a loss in expected payoff and increased payoff variance. Such "fear of commitment" has also been studied in psychology (Serling and Betz 1990), although there it describes how people adhere to action plans, rather than relationships. Bowlby (1969) studies a phenomenon called "attachment style", a classification of people's emotions and behavior with respect to the parent-child relation and romantic relationships.…”
