Development and evaluation of Modified Atmosphere (MA) packages<br>employing lamination technique for Royal Delicious apple

Abstract: Modified atmosphere (MA) packages were prepared for Royal Delicious apple with an aim to achieve the optimum storage atmosphere within the packages in minimum possible time. Apples were harvested at their commercial maturity and respirtion rate of the fruits was measured at temperatures between 0 -25°C. On the basis of preliminary investigations, air composition with 3% O 2 and 3% CO 2 was found appropriate for MA packaging of apple. The MA package was finalized with a size of 24 cm x 19 cm for 1 kg fill-weigh… Show more

“…The selection of packaging films with suitable gas transmission properties is of crucial importance to achieve desirable gas composition within the package capable of maintaining quality and extending shelf life to the produce (Exama et al 1993;Costa et al 2011;. With the objective of meeting MAP requirements of fruit selected for study the polymeric high, medium and low barrier hydrophilic films namely LDPE, BOPP, PVC, PVDC were procured from Reliance Food Industry, Kolkata considering various film characteristics (Exama et al 1993;Mangaraj et al 2009Mangaraj et al , 2012Mangaraj et al , 2013. The concise technical details of the films are as follows:…”

“…LDPE+LLDPE of 60 µm thickness. The above differential mass balance equations were used for the design of MAS system and to design MAS for 100 kg weight of guava and all the required design parameters given in Table 3 were calculated by using equations (1) and (2) (Mangaraj et al ., 2013, 2015a, 2015b).…”

“…Silicon rubber septums were glued to the packages to facilitate gas sampling. The MA packages were labeled marked and kept in the incubator for subsequent storage study at 10, 15, 20 and 25 ºC (Mangaraj et al 2005;Mangaraj et al 2012a, b;Mangaraj et al 2013b). The samples of package air were analyzed on Gas Chromatograph (Mangaraj and Goswami 2009a, b) eq , Z CO2 eq and t eq were compared for validation of the developed model.…”
