Development and Implementation of a Simplified Tool Measuring System

Abstract: This paper presents a simplified system for measuring geometric profiles of end mills. Firstly, a CCD camera was used to capture images of cutting tools. Then, an image acquisition card with the encoding function was adopted to convert the source of image into an USB port of a PC, and the image could be shown on a monitor. In addition, two linear scales were mounted on the X-Y table for positioning and measuring purposes. The signals of the linear scales were transmitted into a 4-axis quadrature encoder with 4… Show more

“…As additional output of this algorithm, it is possible to estimate the angle of the helix of the considered flute, that is also the major cuttingedge inclination 𝜆 𝑠 . To do this, first solve the optimization problem in (2) considering the points selected in STEP 2.7 for the cutting edge and update the values of ℎ 1 as in (8). The helix angle is estimated as…”

“…Tool presetting requires in general the knowledge to the diameter and length of the tool only, which can be easily and accurately measured by 2D measuring systems. 2D tool measurement has been vastly applied for the characterization of tools, including studies on the measuring systems [8], the measurement of the tool profile parameters [9,10], and, most relevant in recent years, the study of automatic methods for tool wear evaluation and monitoring [11,12,21,[13][14][15][16][17][18][19][20].…”

“…The general measuring process involves are two dierent methods: non-contact optical metrology (with high-precision CCD cameras) [6] and contact metrology (with touching probe) [7]. Each of the methods has a target application, for example: optical cameras that use the transmitted light method are used to measure tool dimensions parameters [8,9], reected light cameras are used to measure angular parameters of surfaces [10,11], and for measuring prole mainly used a contact probes [12]. Automated cutting tool measurement process is based on machine vision technology [13].…”
