Development and implementation strategies of a nurse-led symptom self-management program in outpatient cancer centres: The Symptom Navi© Programme

Abstract: The Symptom Navi© Programme (SN©P) is a structured nurse-led intervention supporting symptom self-management in cancer patients. We describe the development and evaluation of the intervention, implementation strategy, and the evaluation of nurse training for the Symptom Navi© Pilot Study. Methods: The intervention was developed using multiple methods (e.g. literature synthesis, focus groups) to produce SN©P information leaflets (SN©Flyers in French and German) and standardised training for nurses to deliver se… Show more

“…Usually, SMS is an educational intervention that is part of an ongoing process to facilitate patient self-management behavior. Examples of SMS projects are Improving Patient Experience and Health Outcomes Collaborative (iPEHOC) [ 68 ], Symptom Management Improves your LifE [ 69 ], OncoKompas [ 67 ], and the Symptom Navi Program [ 70 , 71 ]. However, current evidence on SMS remains inconclusive to date [ 72 ].…”

“…Another example is the Symptom Navi Program, which describes implementation of a nurse-led intervention. It is especially developed to guide patients in self-management applying the principles of SMS, based on behavior change theories [ 70 , 71 ]. The integration of the Symptom Navi Program as an eHealth intervention is currently investigated.…”

“…21 To address the lack of standardized approaches to nurse-led SMS in Switzerland, we began developing the Symptom Navi Program (SNP) in 2011 by collaborating with healthcare professionals and patients diagnosed with cancer. 22 The SNP complements usual nursing care and consists of written information leaflets called Symptom Navi Flyers (SN-Flyers), nurse-led semistructured consultations using the SN-Flyers, and a training manual to standardize SNP implementation. 23 Best practices recommend testing feasibility and effectiveness of complex interventions, like the SNP, prior to widespread implementation.…”

“…Breast cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy, may cause undesirable side effects for patients, including nausea and vomiting, dry mouth, taste changes, loss of appetite, weight changes, diarrhea, alopecia, infection, and energy loss. These side effects can influence patients’ self-care abilities, causing them to neglect their physiological and psychological welfare [ 1 , 2 ]. Therefore, self-care during cancer therapy is an essential non-pharmacological approach to improving the well-being of patients living with breast cancer [ 2 , 3 , 4 ].…”

Therefore, self-care during cancer therapy is an essential non-pharmacological approach to improving the well-being of patients living with breast cancer [ 2 , 3 , 4 ]. Furthermore, self-care includes activities that individuals initiate and engage in to maintain their quality of life, health, and well-being [ 4 , 5 ].…”
