Development and Initial Validation of the Impression Motivation in Sport Questionnaire–Team

Abstract: 2Impression motivation is an important individual difference variable that has been under-3 researched in sport psychology. The purpose of this study was to design a measure of 4 impression motivation for use with team-sport athletes. A variety of construct validity checks 5 decreased the initial pool of items, exploratory analyses (n = 310) revealed the factor 6 structure of the newly-developed scale, and confirmatory factor analytic procedures (n = 406) 7 provided a modified version of the scale that retaine… Show more

“…Maintaining a high level of peak running speed in the knockout stage is most likely caused by the high rank of the tournament. Playing matches against better opponents and the risk of dropping out of the tournament generate strong motivation in players (Payne et al, 2013). It must be noted that even the slightest decrease in peak running speed, compared to the opponent, may lead to a ball loss and, in consequence, to losing a goal and a match (Yue et al, 2014).…”

“…It should be noted, however, that this practice is appropriate when ESEM is used in a more confirmatory mode, in other words, when researchers have clear views of the factor structure expected. If neither ICM-CFA nor ESEM produces acceptable model fit, or if researchers do not have a clear view of the expected factor structure, ESEM can be used in an exploratory fashion (e.g., seePayne, Hudson, Akehurst, & Ntoumanis, 2013).…”

“…The outcome may also be influenced by external factors, such as whether the game is played at home or away, the temperature and humidity [14], the altitude [15], and the quality of the opponent [16]. Many coaches emphasise the fact that success in football matches is also dependent upon the players' volitional features and motivation [17], as well as their mental predispositions and the efficiency of their analytical and decision-making processes [18].…”
