“…It is not surprising that such demographic mirrors have been consulted intensively, but not exclusively, in urban historical research in Scandinavia. Much use has also been made of such diverse sources as registers of births and deaths, parish catechical examination ledgers, probate inventories, taxation assessments and censuses of distribution (Lext, 1967;PitkŠnen, 1977;Markkanen, 1978;Lind, 1979;Baigent, 1988;Hoppe and Langton, 1992;Lilja, 1994). Conspicuous by their absence are town directories which have considerable potential and as yet have been overlooked as a result of the multitude of alternative high quality sources available.…”

“…Curiously, several studies dealing more directly than Hansen's and Hyldtoft's with the interrelations between towns are not used. 3 Mostly I am astonished that the author does not draw the standard surveys on urbanization in Denmark into the discussion (although they are quoted). This is hard to understand because the survey articles by Boje/Hyldtoft and Hyldtoft are founded widely on the same source material and theoretical and methodological framework as Wichmann Matthiesen's study.…”
