“…On the day of proestrus, before the peak in estradiol and progesterone levels, rats spend more time sleeping than any other estrous phase ( Colvin et al, 1968 ). Typically, estrogen peaks a few hours before dark phase onset and progesterone peaks early in the dark phase ( Smith et al, 1975 ; Gotlieb et al, 2020 ). During the night of proestrus, the amount of REM and NREM sleep is markedly reduced in female rats relative to the same time point in other phases of the estrous cycle ( Colvin et al, 1968 , 1969 ; Yamaoka, 1978 ; Kleinlogel, 1983 ; Fang and Fishbein, 1996 ; Schwierin et al, 1998 ; Hadjimarkou et al, 2008 ; Schwartz and Mong, 2013 ).…”

“…2 ). Estradiol concentrations are low during diestrus but build to a peak by the afternoon of proestrus, which, in conjunction with a daily circadian signal, triggers ovulation ( 9 , 10 ). This is quickly followed by a sharp peak in progesterone produced by the corpus luteum, which declines by the following morning ( 11-13 ).…”

“…Our study also supports the hypothesis that maternal body condition or energy balance contributes to changes in progesterone ( Wilsterman et al, 2018 ). Intriguingly, new data from this study suggest that stress exposure alters the daily pattern of corticosterone production (see Figures 5A,B ), perhaps pointing to effects of stress on the circadian system (e.g., Smarr et al, 2017 ; Varcoe, 2018 ; Gotlieb et al, 2020 ). More detailed work on markers of energy balance that may influence progesterone secretion and circadian dynamics related to stress responses during gestation are needed to disentangle the mechanisms driving this relationship.…”
