Development and Psychometric Analysis of the Scale of Attitudes Toward Disabled Persons

Abstract: The Scale of Attitudes toward Disabled Persons (SADP) was developed as a contemporary, brief, easy to administer and score, and psychometrically sound instrument to provide a valid, reliable, and multidimensional measure of attitudes toward disabled persons as a group. The 24 item SADP provides a total score as well as three factorially derived subscale scores. Data are presented which indicate satisfactory item characteristics, reliability, and internal consistency for the total scale and subscales. Detailed … Show more

“…Convergent validity, discriminant validity, and additional reliability data The purpose of Study 3 was to provide additional internal consistency reliability data for the ISIS and to provide additional validity-related evidence for the factors. We predicted that the ISIS would be related to existing measures of attitudes and beliefs toward inclusion and individuals with disabilities (Antonak 1980;Wilczenski 1992). …”

“…Parameters for the literature review included research and reports published between 1970 and 2008 whose primary focus addressed results, concerns, beliefs, and attitudes relevant to inclusive practice. Antonak (1980Antonak ( , 1981Antonak ( , 1982, Avramidis, Bayliss, and Burden (2000), Planty et al (2008), Wilczenski (1992), Yuker and Block (1986), and Yuker, Block, and Young (1970) are representative of reports and researchers whose work provides a framework for the development of the initial items of the instrument (see Figure 2). Every effort was made to (a) ensure the ISIS effectively captured inclusion-related beliefs, (b) keep the instrument relatively short and simple to complete, and (c) keep the ISIS worded so it could be used with both practicing and pre-service educators internationally.…”

“…The three scenarios were presented in random order to the participants to avoid any carryover effects from one scenario to the next. Following each scenario, participants completed the Scale of Attitudes toward Disabled Persons (SADP; Antonak 1982). The SADP consists of 24 Likert-scale items with values ranging from 1 (I disagree very much.)…”

“…Many existing instruments capture general attitudes toward disability (Antonak, 1982;Findler, Vilchinsky, & Werner, 2007;Gething & Wheeler, 1992;Grand, Bernier, & Strohmer, 1982;Makas, Finnerty-Fried, Sigafoos, & Reiss, 1988;Tringo, 1970;Voeltz, 1980;Yuker, Block, & Younng, 1966). A number of these focus on particular providers' attitudes toward disability, such as the attitudes of health care workers (Chadd & Pangilinan, 2011), rehabilitation specialists (Dunn, 1996;Dunn & Mermis, 1992), dental professionals (Miller & Heil, 1976), and nurses (Gething, 1992).…”
