Development and Psychometric Evaluation of a Self-administered Questionnaire to Measure Knowledge of Sexually Transmitted Diseases

Abstract: This research developed and evaluated a brief but comprehensive measure of knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) for use in research and applied settings. Questionnaire construction involved a review of empirical precedents as well as qualitative work with STD experts (n = 6) and the target population (n = 40). Eighty-five items were piloted (n = 50) and tested (n = 391) with college students. Item-and test-level analyses identified items that were eliminated to shorten the questionnaire. Factor… Show more

“…41 A 27-item STD Knowledge Questionnaire (STD-KQ), a comprehensive self-report measure of knowledge about STDs demonstrating good internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha=0.86), was used to assess STD knowledge. 42 For both HIV and STD scales, responses were "true," "false," or "don't know." In scoring, each correct answer was awarded one point; incorrect and "don't know" responses were scored zero.…”

“…Questionnaire consisted of sociodemographic characteristics (including type of MSM), awareness of hepatitis B and C, and 20-item questions assessing knowledge of the meaning (1), basic prevalence (1), means of transmission (4), basic symptoms and signs (4), fatality (2), and means of prevention of the infections (8). Questionnaire was adapted from validated tools for the assessment of knowledge of sexually transmitted infections, as well as from previous surveys [12][13][14].…”

“…We translated and validated the Sexually Transmitted Disease Knowledge Questionnaire, a standard, brief but comprehensive instrument developed by Jaworski and Carey in 2007 (13). We translated two main sections of the instrument: cause/cure and general knowledge about STIs.…”

“…The total score ranged from 0 to 27. Jaworski and Carey found that the internal consistency of the instrument (Cronbach's alpha = 0.86) and test-retest reliability (0.88) were excellent (13).…”
