Development and psychometric properties of the Malaysian elder abuse scale

Abstract: Elder abuse is an emerging issue of serious concern with life-threatening consequences. This study aimed to develop and assess the validity and reliability of a new scale to assess elder abuse. A cross-sectional multistage sampling technique was used to obtain a nationally representative sample of older Malaysians. The iterative development process resulted in a 16-item, four-dimension scale. Exploratory factor analysis yielded a 10-item scale with three factors. The value of Cronbach's alpha for total scale a… Show more

“…However, the screening tool is useful in describing a general dimension of mistreatment, and it does not distinguish between types. This is true although it uses the WHO mistreatment typology to generate different items ( Hamid et al, 2013 ). In addition, we compared the outcomes of the tool with expert diagnoses of cases and observed internal consistency across the 15 items based on a Cronbach’s alpha value of 0.89.…”

“…A review of existing data collection tools shows that many of such tools can only be used by specific health professionals while others are designed to be used within larger demographic health surveys. A third category of these tools includes those used through social and legal services ( Acierno, Hernandez-Tejada, Muzzy, & Steve, 2009 ; Aravanis et al, 1993 ; Bond & Butler, 2013 ; Hamid et al, 2013 ; Hwalek & Sengstock, 1985 ; Hwalek, Sengstock, & Lawrence, 1984 ; Lindenbach, Larocque, Lavoie, & Garceau, 2012 ; Sellas, 2004 ; WHO 2008 ). In 2008, the WHO presented a tool that could be used at the first level of care ( Perel-Levin, 2008 ), and a tool developed by Burnett et al (2014) has proven useful for working with older adults with disabilities.…”

“…The cultural adaptation and validation of the FAMOASQ in Colombia that is provided in this study is relevant because it allows early detection, with four or more positive responses to abuse, in the face of a still hidden problem but of great importance for public health and the individual who suffers it. The administration enables adequate care and follow-up by professionals who are in contact with this demographic (Hamid et al, 2013). At the same time, because abuse has multiple risk factors, its systematic use can prevent a greater probability of death, injury and psychological effects (Burnett et al, 2014;Schofield et al, 2013).…”

“…The continuous growth of the elderly population will render Malaysia with an ageing nation status by the year 2030. The population projection by The Department of Statistics, Malaysia displayed that by 2030, the elderly population would escalate up to 15 percent out of the overall population in Malaysia (Hamid et al, 2013;Sulaiman, 2011). The increasing elderly group and soon retirement group among the Malaysian population should be interpreted as an important segment to be taken into consideration by policymakers in this country, for such trend will have long-term implications towards the national economics.…”
