Development and testing of 10 kW fully HTS generator

Abstract: Electrical machines on the base of high temperature superconductors (HTS) could provide high specific (kW/kg) and volumetric (kW/m3) power. The most promising of them are fully HTS machines. Significant number of parameters and factors which have an impact on HTS windings make analytical analysis of the machine very complex. In this paper description of the prototype of fully HTS electrical machine is provided. Manufactured prototype was tested, experimental and calculation results were compared. In particular… Show more

“…One of the essential operational characteristics of electric aircraft machines is reliability [6][7][8][9][10]. A fully superconducting electrical machine based on the second generation HTS tapes [11,12], Engineering created at the moment in the world, did not pass the service life tests.…”

“…This type of machine has more advantages, such as increasing the current density of the armature, reducing the Joule losses and decreasing the thickness of the air gap (the cryostat enclosing the whole machine), which makes it possible to achieve higher power densities and efficiencies. However, AC losses are still a significant brake on their development, even though the feasibility and efficiency have been proven through various prototypes: totally superconducting [11,12], or hybrid including permanent magnets-type inductors and superconducting armatures [13][14][15][16]. Twisted filament high-temperature superconducting tapes and MgB2 wires seem to be potential candidates for such structures [17].…”

“…At present, various projects of HTS electrical machines are known [17,18]. In particular, at the Moscow Aviation Institute (MAI), machines with HTS rotor windings and copper stator windings were made, as well as fully superconducting machines [19][20][21][22][23]. However, the literature offers scarce data on the design, creation, and study of systems including various HTS devices.…”

“…However, there are few experimental studies of such devices in the world. The first such machine in Russia has been tested at the MAI [23]. Agreement of the theoretical approaches and technological manufacturing methods has been demonstrated.…”
