Scab caused by the Cladosporium cladosporioides complex is one of the most important diseases affecting passion fruit yield and fruit quality. Standard area diagrams are useful tools to improve the accuracy and reliability of the estimates of disease severity in many pathosystems. The interpretation of the accuracy of the resulting disease data may be the basis for providing better disease management. This study aimed to develop and validate standard area diagrams (SADs) to quantify scab severity of entire‐margined leaves of sour passion fruit plants. The SADs are composed of ten images of scab severity values (0.4%, 3.5%, 5.4%, 8.0%, 11.1%, 16.2%, 26.1%, 38.2%, 47.9% and 58.9%). Twenty raters (ten experienced and ten inexperienced ones) evaluated the SADs. The raters estimated the same set of fifty images twice. In the examination, the SADs were used, while in the second examination, they were not used. Accuracy was significantly improved by using the SADs. The coefficients of bias (Cb) were 0.96 and 0.98 for the experienced raters and 0.75 and 0.98 for the inexperienced raters without and with SADs, respectively. The correlation coefficient (r) values were 0.95 and 0.97 for the experienced raters and 0.89 and 0.97 for the inexperienced raters without and with the use of the SADs, respectively. Lin's concordance correlation coefficient (ρc) values were 0.91 and 0.95 for the experienced raters and 0.66 and 0.95 for the inexperienced raters without and with the use of the SADs, respectively. Moreover, the coefficient of determination (R2) significantly improved when the SADs were used. The SADs proposed in this study, if properly used, may improve both the accuracy and reliability during the evaluation of scab severity of entire‐margined leaves of sour passion fruit plants.

Agriculture remains a mainstay gross domestic product earner and key contributor for public health nutrition of various economies in sub-Saharan Africa. Pests and disease attacks, and ecological health effects are some of the vital challenges to agro-productivity and sustainability. Early detection, proper diagnosis, accurate and precise measurement or correct estimation of disease would help mitigate the losses encountered by the farm economy from these bio-pressures which already are known to exceed 50% postharvest. Classical and conventional approaches to crop loss assessments though useful but whose accuracy depends largely on the skill of the assessors is on the other hand time consuming and prone to some forms of biases. Modern technology through remote sensing techniques and various other forms of satellite-based or airplane-borne sensing systems including radar, GIS, GPS and drones hold strong potentials for improving disease detection, disease or damage assessment and crop loss estimation. Herein, a review highlighting some of the standard and innovative techniques of plant disease, biotic and abiotic stress detection, assessment, measurement and crop loss estimation is presented.

The occurrence of water sources with high concentrations of salts in the semiarid region of Northeast Brazil stands out as a limiting factor in the cultivation of irrigated yellow passion fruit. Thus the search for irrigation strategies with brackish water is fundamental for the sustainability of irrigated crops. The objective of the present study was to determine the quantum yield, chlorophyll levels, and cell damage in yellow passion fruit cultivated under different irrigation strategies with brackish water and potassium fertilization. The experiment was conducted under field conditions in São Domingos -PB, Brazil, adopting a randomized block design in a 6×2 factorial scheme, consisting of six strategies of use of brackish water applied in the different phenological stages of crop and two doses of potassium (60 and 100% of the recommendation), with four replicates. Two levels of irrigation water salinity were used, with low (1.3 dS m -1 ) and high electrical conductivity (4.0 dS m -1 ). The potassium dose of 100% recommendation corresponds to the application of 345 g of K 2 O per plant per year. The use of brackish water (4.0 dS m -1 ) increased chlorophyll fluorescence and negatively affected the photosynthetic pigments of yellow passion fruit, regardless of the phenological stage. Salt stress intensified intercellular electrolyte leakage in passion fruit plants under higher dose of potassium. Our results show that fertilization equivalent to 100% of the potassium recommendation is excessive for yellow passion fruit 'BRS GA1' in the tropical semiarid region under salt stress conditions.
