Development and Validation of a Method for the Quantification of an Alkaloid Fraction of Himatanthus lancifolius (Muell. Arg.)Woodson by Ultraviolet Spectroscopy

Abstract: For the registration of phytomedicines and their availability to the population, National Agency of Sanitary Surveillance (ANVISA) establishes quality, security, and efficacy parameters, stipulating control requirements similar to those applied to synthetic medicines. This work reports the investigation of the bark ofHimatanthus lancifoliusand its extracts aiming to contribute to the standardization of derivatives of this plant species. The developed quantification method shows high selectivity at 281nm, which… Show more

“…According to the previous studies, these absorption bands are characteristic for phytochemicals like alkaloids, flavonoids, phenols, saponins and terpenoids (Kalaichelvi and Dhivya, 2017) Our findings also confirm the aforementioned studies. An investigation conducted by Patrica et al, (2013) explained that alkaloid fraction showed maximum absorption at 281 nm in UV spectroscopy which is in resemblance to our findings (Barros et al, 2013). Joshi et al, (2012) have reported that UV-VIS spectra of flavonoid and related glycosides exhibit two strong absorption peaks at 300-380 nm and 230-290 nm (Joshi, 2012).…”

“…The maceration and extraction of samples were carried out with n-hexane, chloroform, methanol and ethanol at room temperature. These extracts were used for quantitative estimation of alkaloids, steroid and tannins 11,12 and values were expressed as mg/ g of leaves extracts Total phenolic contents of extracts were determined by using Folin-Ciocalteu reagent 13 and standard solutions of gallic acid was used for calibration curve. The total phenolic contents were expressed as milligrams of gallic acid equivalent (mg GAE/g) of leaves extract.…”
