Development and validation of a risk perception scale of medical help-seeking behavior in Chinese adults

Abstract: Background: When people require medical treatment, many risk factors including adverse medical events, economic burdens, and social-psychological consequences may contribute to their hesitation to seek medical help. Therefore, a reliable and valid instrument that can comprehensively assess the risk perception of medical help-seeking behavior among ordinary Chinese adults should be developed. Methods:The basic dimensions of the scale were determined based on literature review and in-depth interviews with patien… Show more

“…Referring to Lyu et al [ 54 ], this study used three items to measure participants’ MFRP in the process of using medical resources; participants were asked to recall their last experience of visiting a medical institution (e.g., a hospital). The items were: “During the diagnosis and treatment process, I worried that the hospital would conduct unnecessary tests”; “During the diagnosis and treatment process, I worried that the doctor would give me unnecessary drugs”; and “I worried that I would have to spend too much money during the diagnosis and treatment process.” One factor was extracted from these three items using exploratory factor analysis, which explained 81.32% of the total variation.…”

“…The total scores were ranked from high to low, the first 27% were chosen as the highest scoring group, and the last 27% were selected as the lowest scoring group. 38 Independent samples t-tests were used to analyze the empirical data, with the resulting t value being the critical ratio (CR). 39 Items with poor discrimination values (p > 0.05) were removed from the item pool.…”

“…The interview records were analyzed using grounded theory and then developed as six categories, as shown in Table 1. Then, the developed 22 questions, including 20 closed questions and two open questions based on the aforementioned six categories, were selected using three methods for item selection (to eliminate indiscriminative items, to quantify the correlation between the score of each item and the total score to eliminate indiscriminative and low correlation coefficient items, and to further identify the principle component factor structure present in a set of variables by utilizing EFA with varimax rotation and CFA) [18][19][20]. An additional three questions were added due to the suggestions of five experts in different fields, including: (1) "You have found time to exercise to increase your physical fitness"; (2) "You have listened to music to relax"; (3) "You have meditated or sat still."…”

“…Descriptive statistics were initially used to describe the sociodemographic profiles of all study subjects. CFA and EFA were used to test the applicability of the theoretical model[18][19][20][25][26][27][28].…”
