Development and validation of a nomogram predicting the overall survival of stage IV breast cancer patients

Abstract: This study aimed to develop a nomogram to predict the overall survival (OS) of stage IV breast cancer patients. We searched the National Cancer Database (NCDB) for stage IV breast cancer patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2013. Predictors of OS were identified and a nomogram was developed and validated using concordance index (C‐index), calibration plots, and risk group stratifications. A total of 7199 patients from the NCDB were included in the study. With a median follow‐up of 25.7 months, the 1‐year and 3‐… Show more

“…This model was validated, and the performance was evaluated. Calibration plots showed an optimal agreement between the observed risks and nomogram to predict the risk of developing relapsed disease [20]; studies by S. R. Li et al and Z. C. Xiong et al combined the de novo MBC patients and those with relapsed disease [18,19]. However, many studies have shown that women with de novo MBC represent a group that is distinct from that of women with relapsed breast cancer [21][22][23] .…”

“… 23 Recently, integration of AAPR with the TNM staging system was shown to have superior predictive accuracy to TNM stage alone. 21 Nomograms, graphic illustrations of a statistical model, have been developed in lung, 24 breast, 25 and other cancers 26 for prognosis estimation. Importantly, the nomogram based on clinicopathological characteristics could predict the survival of cancer patients more accurately than could the TNM staging system.…”

“…They also found that the nomogram is su cient even for EC patients receiving adjuvant radiotherapy or not. Radiotherapy was found to be an independent risk factor for breast cancer and prostate cancer [22,23] . The reason why EC nomogram was not included in Abu-Rustum's and our nomogram might be that the patients who underwent adjuvant radiotherapy and adjuvant chemotherapy were older and had an higher grade histology.…”
