Development and validation of a low-cost electrical resistivity tomographer for soil process monitoring

Abstract: This paper presents the development and validation of a low-cost electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) system for the monitoring of process in soils. The ERT technique is capable of evaluating the distribution of electrical properties within a cross section of soil specimens by measuring the applied electrical current and monitoring the voltage distribution along boundary electrodes. This new ERT system consists of (i) a two-dimensional (2D) acrylic testing cell with strip copper electrodes, (ii) an acquisit… Show more

“…Electrical resistivity EC is a criterion that has been used over the years both in assessing the hydration process of cement pastes [ 206 ], and the mechanical and deformation properties of soils [ 207 , 208 ]. Its immense advantages for use in geotechnics and geoengineering are its relatively low cost and time-efficient testing and, above all, its lack of interference with the natural soil structure [ 209 ].…”

“…Geotechnical laboratory cells with ERT capabilities have been described by Comina et al (2008), Damasceno et al (2009) and Lee & Santamarina (2010). ERT images have been used to locate heterogeneities , to visualise liquefaction (Jinguuji et al, 2007) and to monitor salt diffusion Damasceno et al, 2009).…”

“…Electrical resistivity is an effective method to assess the physicochemical properties of natural and engineered soils (Cai et al, 2015). Some investigations indicate that the soil's electrical resistivity can determine the soil characterization and mechanical properties (Damasceno et al, 2009;Rinaldi and Cuestas, 2002). Komine (1997) conducted an experimental study on the chemical grouted sand to evaluate the soil geotechnical properties using the electrical resistivity method.…”
