Development and Validation of a Nomogram Incorporating Colloid Osmotic Pressure for Predicting Mortality in Critically Ill Neurological Patients

Abstract: Backgrounds: The plasma colloid osmotic pressure (COP) values for predicting mortality are not well-estimated. A user-friendly nomogram could predict mortality by incorporating clinical factors and scoring systems to facilitate physicians modify decision-making when caring for patients with serious neurological conditions. Methods: Patients were prospectively recruited from March 2017 to September 2018 from a tertiary hospital to establish the development cohort for the internal test of the nomogram, while pati… Show more

“…Fibrinogen and albumin are two widely reported proteins with properties related to inflammation, nutrition, and blood flow dynamics ( 29 ). Serum albumin plays a crucial role in maintaining colloid osmotic pressure, scavenging free radicals, and altering the permeability of capillary membranes ( 30 , 31 ). The nutritional and inflammatory status of patients can be effectively assessed by considering the preoperative serum albumin level ( 32 ).…”

“…Such parameters would enhance the ability to predict survival on an individual basis if they were integrated into rationally designed predictive models. As an alternative to traditional methods, the nomogram has emerged as a more straightforward and advanced method, 13 , 14 , 15 , 16 , 17 owing to its advantage in flexibly using clinical parameters to predict the incidence of adverse events or survival rate through a scoring system rather than any complicated calculation formula.…”

“…The cerebrovascular disease has a high mortality rate because of its acute progression, quickly deteriorating into severe complications, such as brain cell edema ( 31 ). With poor prognosis and high morbidity, cerebrovascular disease patients suffer from poor quality of life and increased public health burden.…”

“…Lv et al ( 31 ) developed a nomogram that could predict mortality by cooperating with COP, neurological pathogenesis, and other useful scores for neurological patients. The proposed prediction model was more accurate than the commonly used mortality scales.…”
