Development and Validation of Oxide/Oxide CMC Combustors Within the HiPOC Program

Abstract: In the framework of the High Performance Oxide Ceramics program (HiPOC), three different oxide/oxide ceramic matrix composite (CMC) materials are studied for a combustion chamber application in continuation of the work reported in Gerendas et al. [1]. A variation in the micro-structural design of the three CMC materials in terms of different fiber architecture and matrix processing are considered in a first work stream. By modification of the matrix and the fiber-matrix interface as well as the application of … Show more

“…It has proven to be promising for a combustor liner in gas turbines [5,6], hot structures in re-entry vehicles, [7] or thermal insulations [8]. UMOX TM is manufactured via a filament winding PIP process, and composed of a precursor derived mullite-SiOC matrix reinforced with continuous pyrocarbon-coated Nextel Ò fibers.…”

“…Use of polysiloxane precursors leads to composites with oxide-based silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) matrices [3,4]. These materials have proven to be promising candidates for the application as a combustor liner in gas turbines [5,6], hot structures in reentry vehicles [7], and thermal insulations [8]. However, small residual amounts of carbon in the SiOC matrices make them susceptible to oxidation at high temperatures.…”
