Development and validation of the Preschool Socioaffective Profile.

Abstract: An analysis of the Preschool Socioaffective Profile (PSP) using a sample of 608 preschoolers revealed high internal consistency, interrater reliability, and stability for the 8 10-item scales and identified 3 coherent factors representing externalizing and internalizing behavior problems and social competence. Boys scored higher than girls on externalizing measures, but not on internalizing measures, which were largely orthogonal. PSP scores were correlated with Child Behavior Check List teacher ratings, and e… Show more

“…The CBCL is a widely used measure of children's behavioral/emotional problems with well-established psychometric properties. It consists of items rated on a 3-point response scale ranging from not true to very true, with some open-ended items designed to elicit detailed information about a particular problem behavior.Higher scores indicate higher externalizing behavior problems in kindergarten.Teacher ratings of externalizing behavior problems were measured using the Social Competence and Behavior Evaluation Scales (LaFreniere & Dumas, 1996;LaFreniere, Dumas, Capuano, & Dubeau, 1992). The scale measures three overall dimensions of social competence, internalizing behavior problems, and externalizing behavior problems.…”

“…The assessment of children's EB was obtained with the Profil Socio-Affectif (PSA) (LaFreniere & Dumas, 1996;LaFreniere, Dumas, Capuano, & Dubeau, 1992), completed by the mothers, fathers and teachers separately. The items focus on the presence or absence of both positive and problematic behavior.…”

“…The items focus on the presence or absence of both positive and problematic behavior. The French adaptation of the scale, consisting of an 80-item 1-to-6-point Likert-type scale, was validated on a sample of 608 preschoolers and demonstrated good properties (LaFreniere et al, 1992). The 20 items of the EB scale, encompassing aggressiveness, irritability and non-compliance, were used for this study.…”

“…This questionnaire, completed by the teacher, measured the social behaviours of the child in three orthogonal factors: (1) social competence, (2) anger-aggression, and (3) anxiety-withdrawal (LaFreniere, Dumas, Capuano, & Dubeau, 1992). The original SCBE is predictive of academic achievement, convergent with the teacher form of the Achenbach System of Empirically Based Assessment (Achenbach & Rescorla, 2001) and direct observation and is reliable among teachers (from 0.78 to 0.91 across four samples) and stable (0.63 to 0.86 for three samples).…”
