Development and validation of the Classroom Observation Protocol for Engineering Design (COPED)

Abstract: Recent education reforms including the Next GenerationScience Standards emphasize integrating engineering into K-12 science instruction. Although prior studies have characterized engineering design (ED) in K-12 settings, no validated protocols attempt to characterize ED integration in secondary science classrooms. The present study used the ED and observation protocol literature to develop, validate, and test the reliability of the Classroom Observation Protocol for Engineering Design (COPED) instrument. Consi… Show more

“…The researchers developed an observation protocol (Appendix D ) to observation online sessions to measure how students engage in online activities and how teachers encourage students to engage in online activities and discussions. The development of the online classroom observation was based on different previous studies including Wheeler et al ( 2019 ) and Topçu et al ( 2018 ) studies. The first two researchers observed 13 online classes for 40 min each.…”

“…However, there are relatively few studies on the subject of teaching and learning. Many studies at present are carried out focusing on the external factors that affect multimedia teaching; that is, the research content is not sufficiently comprehensive, and there are still some limitations [11][12][13][14].…”

“…The activity has science and engineering as the two lead disciplines. It spanned three 1-h lessons and required students to both learn and apply relevant scientific conceptual knowledge to solve a complex, real-world problem through processes that resemble the engineering design process (Wheeler et al, 2019 ).
