“…The theoretical yield is 0.578 g/g under no butyrate and no hydrogen formation conditions . High dilution rates (D = 0.2 h −1 ) combined with high glycerol concentrations (50–70 g/L) decreased mass yield to 0.3–0.23 g/g probably as a result of the pathways towards organic acids and other metabolites or inhibition . Glycerol consumed (S 0 ‐S r ) increased linearly with increases in inlet substrate concentration for low dilution rates (0.05 h −1 ).…”

“…Butyric acid is a common byproduct when Clostridium species are used as biocatalysts. Butyric acid could be a strong competitor for 1,3‐PD since both use NaDH2 as a coenzyme . Papanikolaou et al demonstrated that, during the continuous fermentation of C. butyricum in industrial glycerol at low and medium specific growth rates (until 0.1 h −1 ), butyrate production was preferred, whereas higher rates favour acetate production.…”

“…Superior results were obtained with Poraver® porous glass beads (Dagher et al 2010;Dishisha et al 2012), Vukopor® and polyurethane foam (Casali et al 2012). …”

“…Both nominated bacterial strains were able to grow on raw glycerol resulting an impressive accumulation of 1,3-PD in the fermentation broths. From this report can be observed that both C. freundii and P. agglomerans are novel strains able to convert raw glycerol into 1,3-propanediol recording good concentrations and conversion yields (Casali et al, 2012).…”
