Development of a Bridge Management System Based on the Building Information Modeling Technology

Abstract: With the development of the Chinese transportation industry, the number of bridges has increased significantly, but this results in high pressure of structural maintenance and management. Bridge management system (BMS) is critical for efficient maintenance and ensured safety of bridge structures during long-term operation. Building information modeling (BIM) is an emerging technology with powerful visualization and informatization capability, making it an ideal tool for developing modern management systems. “…There have been numerous studies related to the health monitoring and maintenance of bridges by using BIM models [ 204 , 205 , 206 , 207 , 208 , 209 , 210 , 211 , 212 , 213 , 214 ]. Combining BIM with other programs such as GIS improves the process of monitoring and risk or damage analysis [ 215 , 216 ].…”

“…Ref. [32] proposed fatigue life, as expressed by Equation (12), based on the results of an experiment involving constant cyclic stress. Because the following equation was proposed through the results of an experiment and adopted in the design standard, it was applied to the information system in this study.…”

“…However, the bridge data schema for the whole lifecycle remain incomplete because the IFC Infrastructure project is at the initial stage, and thus is focused on the improvement of modeling. To overcome the limitations of the current IFC, an increasing number of studies in the BIM and BMS fields have been undertaken to extend the data schema based on the IFC [10][11][12].…”

“…This gives an idea of the magnitude of the required maintenance and structural management activities. Here is where the BIM technology can develop an efficient management and maintenance system for bridges [12], which in turn will improve traffic safety. For that goal, a standard method for structural modeling is required.…”
