Development of a coupling between a system thermal–hydraulic code and a reduced order CFD model

Abstract: The nuclear community has coupled several three-dimensional Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) solvers with one-dimensional system thermal-hydraulic (STH) codes. This work proposes to replace the CFD solver by a reduced order model (ROM) to reduce the computational cost. The system code RELAP5-MOD3.3 and a ROM of the finite volume CFD solver OpenFOAM are coupled by a partitioned domain decomposition coupling algorithm using an implicit coupling scheme. The velocity transported over a coupling boundary interfac… Show more

“…To the best of the authors' knowledge, the developed ROM is a novel contribution to the fluid dynamics ROM literature. Moreover, this method can be considered as an alternative for approaches where fluid dynamics POD-RB-ROMs are used for large volumes of clean fluids and thermal-hydraulics system codes for other elements in the loop [32].…”

“…This contribution, to the best of the authors' knowledge, is novel in the reduced-order modeling community. We also note that some recent work has focused on the coupling between POD-RB-ROMs and thermal-hydraulics system codes [32] and can be an alternative to the work presented here.…”

“…In the design and calculation field, Sartori et al (2016) used ROM to perform physical and thermal coupling calculations for a single channel of lead-cooled fast reactor. Star et al (2021) coupled the RELAP code and ROM to conduct threedimensional thermal coupling calculations for open and closed pipelines. Kang et al (2022) used non-inclusive ROM to predict the flow field between reactor rod bundles.…”
