“…The frequency of thermal fatigue cycles in recirculation pipes and pumps is estimated at about 10Hz, thus the cracks that initiate are referred to as high cycle thermal fatigue cracks. Hirano et al (8,9,10) manufactured a high frequency thermal fatigue testing apparatus with simulated BWR water environment. They found that the convection coefficients between the water and the specimen surface were remarkably high: 50 to 70kW/m 2 K for thermal cycle frequencies lower than 5Hz and 70 to 120kW/m 2 K for thermal cycle frequencies higher than 5Hz.…”
