Development of a glass-ceramic glaze formulated from industrial residues to improve the mechanical properties of the porcelain stoneware tiles

Abstract: In this research a mixture of 90%wt of industrial residues (recycled soda-lime glass and ashes from a coal power thermal plant) have been vitrified for their use as "secondary raw material". Then, a glaze suspension was prepared to be applied as a glaze suspension on the porcelain stoneware tile. The tested pieces have been fired by a conventional porcelain cycle at 1180ºC of maximum temperature. The XRD, XRF, SEM/EDS and the dilatometric analysis have been the instrumental techniques used to characterize the … Show more

“…Because the consumption habits of the population have generated environmental problems such as the growth of landfills and depletion of natural resources [1,2], scientific research has been much requested regarding the recycling of discarded materials, for finding new utilities and generating value from the waste [2][3][4][5]. Glass, despite being recyclable, occupies large volumes in landfills [6].…”

“…Technological performance indicators are shown in Table 6, namely, dimensional conformity, which is measured by comparing the effective length with the nominal length (ISO 10545-2) (the measurements were performed with CNE100 1000 mm fiftiethsimal caliper, ±0.02); water absorption conformity which is measured under vacuum according to ISO 10545-3 [86] (the measurements were performed with Bel Engineering M6202Di Model Precision balance, ±0.01 g); and flexural strength according to ISO 10545-4 [87] (the measurements were performed with Gabbrielli Technology Flexi 1000 LX-650, ±100 g). Linear shrinkage of fired tiles was determined as the difference between the length of unfired and fired samples [88].…”

“…A reciclagem e reutilização do resíduo produzido por estas indústrias, depois de detectadas suas potencialidades, é considerada uma excelente alternativa de matéria-prima para fabricação de produtos cerâmicos, podendo contribuir para a diversificação de produtos, com diminuição dos custos de produção, com a conservação dos atuais recursos não renováveis, com a economia de energia e principalmente contribuindo para a preservação do meio ambiente [4,5].…”
