Development of a multimodal foveated endomicroscope for the detection of oral cancer

Abstract: A multimodal endomicroscope was developed for cancer detection that combines hyperspectral and confocal imaging through a single foveated objective and a vibrating optical fiber bundle. Standard clinical examination has a limited ability to identify early stage oral cancer. Optical detection methods are typically restricted by either achievable resolution or a small field-of-view. By combining high resolution and widefield spectral imaging into a single probe, a device was developed that provides spectral and … Show more

“… 2 6 Other proof-of-concepts measured the oxygen saturation (OS) of various organs 7 ; assessed the presence of molecules such as cholesterol, melanin, and hemoglobin 8 , 9 ; enhanced the surgeon's vision in oncologic surgery and laparoscopy 10 13 ; predicted hemorrhagic shock and appraising hemodynamics 14 16 ; classified corneal injury 17 ; augmented contrast for histologic examinations 18 , 19 ; and detected neoplasms of the skin, mouth, colon, brain, and others. 3 , 5 , 20 22 In ophthalmology, HSI can be used to assess the state and distribution of chromophores, such as cytochrome C, and assess the metabolic status of hemoglobin in the context of retinal blood vessel oxygenation. Such information is valuable to diagnose and monitor various ocular diseases including age-related macular degeneration (ARMD), glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy.…”

“…This endoscope could acquire datacubes (350×350 pixels×48 channels, spatial resolution 100 µm) at a speed of 5.2 cubes/s for reflectance and fluorescence imaging 105 . Another recent study presented a multimodal endomicroscope that combined high-resolution confocal fluorescence imaging with wide-field snapshot multispectral imaging 120 . Ex vivo imaging of human oral tissue specimens demonstrated the capability of the endomicroscope to rapidly localize abnormal lesions within a 5-mm field of view followed by high-resolution multispectral imaging to determine the presence and degree of neoplasia 120 .…”
