Development of a New Material for Mine Fire Control

Abstract: In order to prevent the spontaneous combustion of coal efficaciously, a new kind of compound material of multiphase foamed gel is obtained, which is composed of fly ash, foaming agent, thickener, crosslinker, and nitrogen and formed by physical and mechanical stirring. It makes use of the all-around capability of gel, foam, grouting, and inhibitor to prevent mine fires. The formation and crosslinking mechanism of multiphase foamed gel were analyzed in theory, and the effects of the mass fraction of foaming age… Show more

“…The particles contribute to improve the foam stability. 35,36 As scanned by Nikon TS100 inverted fluorescence microscope in Figure 13, some powders are adsorbed in the liquid membrane and the other are coalescence in the plateau border that is also observed by Jiang. 37 Those small solid powders frame a net skeleton structure in the interior three-phase foam that is helpful for postponing the liquid membrane attenuation.…”

“…After a period of time, in the foam liquid films, the thickener has interaction with crosslinker, forming three-dimensional network structures, which constitutes the rigid backbone of foamed gel, significantly improving the foam stability. The foamed gel has all the properties of the methods of injecting nitrogen, foam, and gel, effectively increasing the efficiency of fire prevention and extinguishing, such as utilizing the asphyxia of nitrogen, the accumulation of foam, and the coverage of gel (Zhang and Qin 2014;Qin et al 2005). In order to investigate the fire extinguishing efficiency, the foamed gel made in laboratory is used to conduct a research on extinguishing coal fire.…”

“…The results show that this foam can be used to fill fractures and reinforce coal walls, stop leakage, block wind, and therefore inhibit the spontaneous combustion of coal. Zhang researched types of gel foams with the combined properties of foams and gels, which showed good stability and high fire‐extinguishing efficiency. Tang studied the inhibition of aerosols on low‐temperature oxidation of coals and considered that an aerosol can be used as a new material for controlling spontaneous combustion disasters in coal.…”
