Development of a New Modified CaCl2·6H2O Composite Phase Change Material

Abstract: CaCl2·6H2O is selected as the original substrate for research, and a new composite phase change material (CPCM) suitable for air-conditioning was developed through experiments. The new modified CaCl2·6H2O CPCM uses glycerol as a temperature regulator and barium hydroxide octahydrate as a nucleating agent. The experimental results show that when the mass ratio of CaCl2·6H2O to glycerol is 85:15, the melting temperature of the CPCM is 11.8 °C and the enthalpy of phase change is 112.86 J/g. The chemical compositi… Show more

“…For example, in the spectrum of calcium chloride hexahydrate, the absorption band at 1630 cm −1 was due to the bending vibration of the H–O–H bond of crystal water. 59 In addition, a band at 2900 cm −1 could be related to the C–H stretching vibrations of alginate. 60 Such absorption bands broadened and shifted to higher wavelengths in the spectra of AGC–PRP–PDA and AGC–PPP–PDA.…”

“…The thermophysical parameters of the analyzed salts are presented below, based on the information contained in the safety data sheets and on the basis of experimental studies by various authors (Table 1). 29 [35] 169.5 [34] 160 [35] 1.71 [33] 1.83 [35] 31.4 [20] Calcium Chloride Hexahydrate Höhlein et al [19] consider magnesium chloride hexahydrate a promising material for practical applications due to its good thermophysical properties. According to the authors of [19], the substance will also prove useful in waste heat transport systems.…”

“…In this work, we explore salogel systems in a different, chloride-based PCM: calcium chloride hexahydrate (CaCl 2 ·6H 2 O, CCH). CCH has low toxicity and is economical compared to lithium-based salt hydrates as it is generated as a waste byproduct in chemical processes such as soda ash production, and is also naturally abundant. ,, In addition, a melting temperature of 29 °C and heat of fusion of 190 J/g make this salt hydrate ideal for thermal energy storage applications in waste heat recovery, textiles, and buildings. ,, Shape stabilization of CCH by impregnation in a porous matrix or encapsulation , has been demonstrated, but these approaches lack temperature-triggered reversibility and also result in a significantly reduced heat of fusion compared to that of neat CCH. Similarly, the use of polymer thickeners for CCH, , or permanently cross-linked networks for the CCH-MgCl 2 ·6H 2 O eutectic, lacks the desired shape stabilization and temperature reversibility.…”
