This study presents a new aluminium mesh made out of soda can rings as a support for titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) in the degradation of the synthetic dyes Bordeaux Red (BR) and Tartrazine (TT). Three pre-treatments including calcination and acidification steps were investigated in order to select the most efficient immobilization procedure for photocatalysis application. Raw and titania-aluminum meshes were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, diffuse reflectance, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The material presented itself as a suitable alternative in the immobilization of titania for wastewater treatment. Preliminary tests selected H 2 O 2 /TiO 2(suspension) oxidation systems under natural sunlight and germicidal lamps (UVC) exhibiting 97.2% and 99.5% of degradation in 180 minutes, respectively. Immobilized TiO 2 systems reached high degradation rates (>99%) after 180 minutes in both UVC and solar light-based processes. An experimental planning study was carried out for the processes in order to find the best operational conditions and pseudo-first-order model fit well the removal data (discolouration rates of in the order of 0.0274 and 0.0145 min −1 for UVC and solar light systems, respectively). Parameters such as TOC, COD, and turbidity, revealed a great improvement in the environmental quality of the water after the treatment and acute toxicity bioassays demonstrated a significant decrease in toxicity for both systems after the treatments. The TiO 2 -meshes demonstrated high performance in the removal after five cycles of operation. Therefore, the new immobilization procedure demonstrated that the TiO 2 -aluminum mesh is a feasible option for wastewater treatment and photocatalysis. In this work, aluminum net crafted (recycled) were used as TiO2 support for the treatment of textile dye Remazol golden yellow (RGY 150). The immobilization of 200mg of TiO2 was accomplished after aluminum net calcination. The following experiments were carried out in a photocatalytic bench reactor: preliminary tests, a 23 factorial experimental design with best system and the degradation kinetic in systems with TiO2 supported on aluminum net.It was observed characteristic peaks of aluminum and TiO2 (anatase and rutile) by XRD and the catalyst film formation was verified by SEM. The system UV/H2O2/TiO2 performed higher efficiency, with 99% of dye degradation in 50 minutes, followed by the system UV/H2O2/TiO2sp with 93% of dye degradation. Whereas the supported catalyst presents execution advantages and high degradation rates, the factorial design was realized for this system, displaying best degradation (100% degradation in 35 minutes). It was obtained k = 0.114 min-1 and R² = 0.994 in a pseudo-first-order model adjustment system. The use of artificial neural network was proven to be efficient to predict the degradation of a textile dye, with an absolute error of 0.0181. After treatment, there was a decrease of dye toxicity.

Organic water pollutants are ubiquitous in the natural environment arising from domestic products as well as current and legacy industrial processes. Many of these organic water pollutants are recalcitrant and only partially degraded using conventional water and wastewater treatment processes. In recent decades, visible light active photocatalyst has gained attention as a non‐conventional alternative for the removal of organic pollutants during water treatment, including industrial wastewater and drinking water treatment. This paper reviews the current state of research on the use of visible light active photocatalysts, their modified methods, efficacy, and pilot‐scale applications for the degradation of organic pollutants in water supplies and waste streams. Initially, the general mechanism of the visible light active photocatalyst is evaluated, followed by an overview of the major synthesis techniques. Because few of these photocatalysts are commercialized, particular attention was given to summarizing the different types of visible light active photocatalysts developed to the pilot‐scale stage for practical application and commercialization. The organic pollutant degradation ability of these visible light active photocatalysts was found to be considerable and in many cases comparable with existing and commercially available advanced oxidation processes. Finally, this review concludes with a summary of current achievements and challenges as well as possible directions for further research. Practitioner Points Visible light active photocatalysis is a promising advanced oxidation process (AOP) for the reduction of organic water pollutants. Various mechanisms of photocatalysis using visible light active materials are identified and discussed. Many recent photocatalysts are synthesized from renewable materials that are more sustainable for applications in the 21st century. Only a small number of pilot‐scale applications exist and these are outlined in this review.
