Development of a Soft Robotic Bending Actuator Based on a Novel Sulfonated Polyvinyl Chloride–Phosphotungstic Acid Ionic Polymer–Metal Composite (IPMC) Membrane

Abstract: This work presents the development of a cost-effective electric-stimulus-responsive bending actuator based on a sulfonated polyvinyl chloride (SPVC)–phosphotungstic acid (PTA) ionic polymer–metal composite (IPMC), using a simple solution-casting method followed by chemical reduction of platinum (Pt) ions as an electrode. The characterizations of the prepared IPMC were performed using Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) techniques, Thermogr… Show more

“…Even in the most recent works, using EIS to calculate IPMC ionic conductivity is common. No further information is given throughout the data obtained independently if the application is an actuator [96][97][98][99][100][101][102] or an energy harvesting device. 103 Thus, in the following sections, we will present some other features for IPMC devices using EIS.…”

“…Polymer-based actuators are one of the most important actuation materials that produce various mechanical responses using numerous external stimuli. One of the common stimulators is electrical energy, which converts electrical energy to mechanical energy [1][2][3]. A lot of polymeric materials are electrically responsive, including ionic polymer gels (IPGs), ionic polymer metal composites (IPMCs), dielectric elastomers (DEMs), conductive polymers (CPs), and piezoelectric polymers (PEPs), which are widely used in making micro/soft robots and biomimetic artificial muscles [4][5][6][7][8].…”
